Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta provincial government has built 583 infiltration wells as a precautionary measure against waterlogging in the Cipinang Rice Center Market, East Jakarta.

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan stated here on Thursday that construction of the infiltration wells was one of the revitalization plans of the Cipinang Rice Market.

"The principle is 'zero run off,' which means no water flow in the market," he explained.

The governor noted that with the infiltration wells, the rainwater in the Cipinang Market complex would not flow into the culverts outside, thereby preventing flooding of the area surrounding the market.

"The rainwater that falls in this complex does not flow into the culverts outside but rather to the
prepared infiltration wells," the governor remarked.

Meanwhile, Baswedan said that revitalization of the Cipinang Rice Center Market included building a resting place for market workers.

"There is a location built for workers in this market, so they can have more decent and comfortable places to live in," he stated.

Furthermore, he noted that the Jakarta provincial government had focused on rejuvenating several traditional markets in Jakarta.

"We want to maintain the existence of traditional markets while keeping cleanliness, neatness, and order to strengthen the market's function where sellers and buyers meet," he stated.

Furthermore, on Thursday, Governor Baswedan and Jakarta province-owned market management company Pasar Jaya President Director Tri Prasetyo inaugurated the newly rejuvenated four markets in Jakarta.

The four refurbished markets were Cipinang Kebembem Market, Sawah Barat Market, Tanah Tinggi Poncol Market, and Tebet Barat Market.

Baswedan expects the newly renovated markets to be able to support the provision of the community's basic needs, such as food, in terms of supply and price.

"Food is the basic need of the people, so (the markets must support) the guarantee of food supplies and prices. These are what every family in Jakarta needs," he stated.
