Jakarta (ANTARA) - Efforts to reduce plastic waste require the involvement of several parties, including the public and the private sector, head of the Human Resources Extension and Development Agency of the Environment and Forestry Ministry, Ade Palguna, said.

"We realize that the community and private sector will contribute to reducing plastic waste," he noted in Sukabumi, West Java, on Tuesday.

Based on data from the ministry's National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN), the amount of waste generated in Indonesia reached 29.8 million tons in 2021.

Of the total waste, 17.54 percent was plastic waste, 40.88 percent was household waste, 18.08 percent was commercial waste, 17.34 percent was traditional market waste, 8.17 percent was office waste, 6.32 percent was public facility waste, and 5.8 percent was regional waste.

Therefore, waste reduction is not only the responsibility of the government, but must also involve the community and the private sector, including industries that produce food and household products, Palguna said.

He lauded the private sector for contributing to efforts to reduce plastic waste, including by educating the public through various programs.

"I support and appreciate the programs because it is not only the government's responsibility to reduce plastic waste. Everyone must be responsible for the waste we create. Collaboration with other parties is needed," he stressed.

He said he hopes that in the future, more private companies will take part in measures to reduce plastic waste and educate the community about the environment.

"More private companies must take part in the program because they are also responsible for the waste," Palguna added.

The government is targeting to reduce plastic waste by 70 percent by 2025 and free the oceans of plastic waste by 2040.
