Trenggalek, E Java (ANTARA) - Flooding and landslides that recently hit certain areas of 12 sub-districts in Trenggalek District, East Java, damaged roads, bridges, and houses, according to the Trenggalek Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD).

The agency reported 94 affected areas, including those in the sub-districts of Trenggalek, Pogalan, Karangan, Gandusari, Kampak, and Panggul, Secretary of the BPBD-Trenggalek Office Tri Puspita Sari stated here Monday.

The flash floods and landslides that occurred following incessant downpour on October 8 had affected residents' activities in the disaster zones owing to damaged infrastructure facilities and houses, Sari remarked.

The floods that inundated certain areas of the sub-districts of Trenggalek, Pogalan, Karangan, Gandusari, Kampak, and Panggul had also cause major damage to a bridge in Kelutan Village, she stated.

Hence, the authorities had installed a warning board that prevents people from crossing the damaged bridge. The government has set up a public kitchen to assist the affected residents, she remarked.

The agency reported that the recent torrential rains had triggered landslides in 74 different areas in the sub-districts of Panggul, Bendungan, Dongko, Watulimo, Suruh, Munjungan, Kampak, and Pule.

The landslides damaged several houses and public facilities in the affected sub-districts, she remarked, adding that this year's disaster was worse than those of the previous years.

However, there were no casualties due to the flooding and landslides. Moreover, she urged locals to stay alert to the impacts of high-intensity rainfall.

Various parts of Indonesia are prone to natural disasters. On October 8, 2022, for instance, floods inundated certain parts of six sub-districts in East Aceh Province, thereby compelling 2,436 residents to flee to safer places.

Most of the flood victims took refuge in village centers, buildings for religious rituals (meunasah), mosques, and traditional Islamic schools (dayah), according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

Within the initial two months of 2021, several hydrological disasters had also struck the islands of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi.

In the island of Kalimantan, massive floods and landslides hit several parts of South Kalimantan following incessant downpour on January 12, 2021.

The floods affected the districts of Banjar, Tapin, Tabalong, Balangan, and Hulu Sungai Tengah and the cities of Tanah Laut and Banjar Baru.

The massive floods, triggered by incessant heavy rains since Jan 12, reportedly claimed 15 lives, swamped 24,379 houses, and displaced 39,549 people.
