"By carrying out carbon-neutral hiking, it is hoped that prospective Mapala UI members can help preserve the environment amid the global climate crisis. Hopefully, this movement can motivate the wider community to be more concerned about nature," president of Mapala UI, Magkma, said here on Monday.
Carbon-neutral hiking is based on three principles, namely calculating, replacing, and reducing emissions, he explained.
Meanwhile, the founder of #SeaSoldier, an environmental organization, Dinni Septianingrum, said that the push for carbon neutrality is meant to realize the absorption of carbon emissions.
Excessive CO2 compounds cause the earth to become warmer, resulting in climate change. For dealing with excessive carbon emissions, the term carbon neutral has been introduced, Septianingrum said.
Meanwhile, the application of carbon neutrality is not only meant to be limited to hiking but also cover other activities in nature, a prospective member of Mapala UI Raditya Anggoro said.
"Carbon neutrality can also be applied to other types of nature activities, such as rafting. This can be done starting from trip planning by paying attention to the components that produce carbon emissions," the acting chief of the Baka-Raya Project explained.
Meanwhile, seeing the potential of exotic natural charms, the government has continued to promote the development of ecotourism in efforts to balance out carbon footprints, especially in the tourism sector.
The Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry has launched the "Towards Climate Positive Tourism through Decarbonization and Ecotourism" program to invite tourists to take part in quality and sustainable tourism activities that will help reduce carbon emissions in the tourism sector.
The destinations covered by the program comprise Plataran Menjangan in West Bali National Park, Tembudan Berseri Berau Mangrove in East Kalimantan, Peramun Hill in Bangka Belitung, and Klawalu Mangrove Tourist Park in Sorong, West Papua.
