Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has disseminated information on disaster prevention efforts at several schools in the province, such as Madrasa Ibtidaiyah (MI/Islamic elementary school) Al Falah, Kwitang village, Senen sub-district, Central Jakarta.

"The activity has been held to educate (students) about the mitigation of potential disasters in schools and anticipatory measures by establishing a disaster response team," Head of the Section for Prevention at Jakarta BPBD Rian Sarsono said here on Wednesday.

He informed that the disaster prevention training and simulation was organized in 130 elementary schools (SD), 53 junior high schools (SMP), 52 senior high schools (SMA), as well as a number of special schools (SLB) and kindergartens in Jakarta.

"We expect that after taking part in the activity, the participants will have high (disaster) awareness by starting to do small things to reduce the risks and be prepared in case a disaster happens," he added.

Furthermore, he thanked the head of Kwitang village, head of Senen sub-district, as well as the management of MI Al Falah for supporting and facilitating the disaster preparedness training and simulation activity.

According to the agency’s website, the training and simulation activity at MI Al Falah covered self-evacuation methods during an earthquake, the utilization of flood evacuation equipment, the preparation of indicators of disaster-safe madrasas, as well as firefighting simulation.

Head of Senen sub-district Rony Jarpiko lauded the disaster prevention dissemination held at schools and madrasas (Islamic schools) to help students to understand how to act when a disaster strikes.

"Hopefully, this activity can be held in other schools which are prone to disasters, while the students can disseminate the disaster prevention and mitigation efforts (to the community)," he remarked.

Principal of MI Al Falah Yuli Muniroh expressed his pleasure at the activity.

"Praises be to God, the students of MI Al Falah are able to gain knowledge about disaster handling and education on (the importance of) not littering the river," the principal added.
