Batam, Riau Islands (ANTARA) - The Tanjungpinang Search and Rescue (SAR) Agency on Tuesday conducted a search for five people who went missing after the wooden boat they were traveling in capsized in the waters of Kabil, Batam city, on Monday.



"Yes, that's right, five people are still being searched, while one person was found dead and another person had been rescued from the wooden boat that capsized last night, Monday (November 14, 2022), at around 10 a.m.," head of the Tanjungpinang SAR, Slamet Riyadi, informed here on Tuesday.



The ship traffic service reported the accident, with the initial report stating that one person was found floating around the waters of Kabil.



Upon receiving the information, the SAR team went down to the location of the accident to conduct a search.



At the location, SAR officers managed to locate one survivor, identified as Zuraidah, 45, from Aceh. Another victim was found dead. According to the survivor, the ship had sailed from Batam and was about to head to Malaysia when the accident happened.

"(Based on information) from the survivor, it is known that there were seven people who were on board. We have found a person dead, and five more people are still being searched," Riyadi informed.



The survivor and the body of the deceased victim have been evacuated to Bhayangkara Hospital, Riau Islands.



Currently, the SAR team is still trying to confirm whether the ship was engaged in ferrying Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) illegally or not.



"We are still looking for information related to that; we will inform later," Riyadi said.

Earlier, on June 16, a ship carrying 30 illegal Indonesian migrant workers to Malaysia had met with an accident in the waters of Putri Island, Batam, Riau Islands, around 7:30 p.m. local time.



The Tanjungpinang SAR team had managed to rescue 23 victims as of June 17 and had launched a hunt for seven missing victims.
