This activity is our joint commitment in dealing with the waste problem in the Citarum river basin areaJakarta (ANTARA) - The Home Affairs Ministry and several local governments whose areas are located around the Citarum River Basin Area (DAS), West Java, signed on an action plan for waste management for the 2022-2025 period.
"This activity is our joint commitment in dealing with the waste problem in the Citarum river basin area," Deputy Minister of Home Affairs John Wempi Wetipo remarked during the signing of the "Action Plan for Waste Management in the Citarum River Basin Area for 2022-2025" here on Friday.
According to Wetipo, the singing of the action plan was a manifestation of a joint commitment between the central and local governments in dealing with the waste problem in the regions, especially around the Citarum DAS.
The polluted Citarum DAS has caused environmental damage that can have a devastating impact on the quality of health, economy, social aspects, ecosystem, and environmental resources, thereby hindering the achievement of environmental protection and management goals, the deputy minister cautioned.

"This is our collective responsibility, both the central and local governments, to present comprehensive handling," he explained.
He expressed optimism that the action plan for waste management in the Citarum DAS would serve as reference in integrating policies and measures from relevant stakeholders.
Meanwhile, the action plan comprises 159 sub-activities divided into four aspects, the Ministry's Director General of Regional Development Teguh Setyabudi explained.
The 159 sub-activities comprise 33 activities related to policies and regulations, eight pertaining to institutions and organizations, 38 related to technical affairs and infrastructure, and 80 linked to community empowerment and stakeholders.

The action plan requires a budget of Rp5.4 trillion from various sources, including the state budget, regional budget, financial assistance and funding from abroad, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and other sources.
Setyabudi emphasized the need for community participation in the management of waste.
"We also conduct direct (practical) activities of waste handling in Bekasi and Bandung, (the waste) obtained from elementary and junior high school students, and non-governmental organizations," he remarked.
