"As a result of the assessment by the Bireuen Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency team, one victim died because he was dragged by the flood currents, while another died because he was electrocuted," acting head of disaster data, information, and communication center at BNPB Abdul Muhari noted in a written statement received here.
Muhari said the two had been evacuated by the regional agency's team. The floods, which struck after high-intensity rains that started at 3:40 a.m. local time, submerged 19 villages in Makmur Sub-district, with floodwaters reaching heights of 20 to 50 centimeters.
The villages impacted by the floods were Bland Dalam, Pandak, Mon Ara, Ulee Gle, Blang Mane, Mereubo, Matang Kumbang, Blang Perlak, Panton Mesjid, Sukarame, Lepehan Mosque, Blang Kuthang, Cot Kruet, Buket Selamat, Tringgadeng, Leubu Mesjid, West Kuta, Leubu Cot, and Leubu Me.
According to the latest report from the Bireuen Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency, the floods had died down in Ulee Gle Village. However, light- to heavy-intensity rains, with possible lightning, can still likely occur in the Bireuen District area until Monday, November 21, according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency.
In response to this, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency appealed to everyone to take precautionary measures against the risk of additional disasters that could be triggered by the extreme weather phenomena.
"Efforts, such as monitoring river conditions; cleaning up trash and other materials that can clog water flows; monitoring the condition of embankments, roads, and bridges; to monitoring water flow during heavy rains are recommended to be done periodically," he remarked.
In order to better prepare for the risk of secondary disasters, people along the river basin are advised to temporarily evacuate themselves in the event of continuous, high-intensity rains lasting for over an hour.
People are also expected to always pay attention to the river discharge conditions and avoid steep slopes with minimal vegetation.
