Half the reports concerned sexual violence, with 860 involving sexual violence in public spaces, chairperson of Komnas Perempuan Andy Yentriyani informed.
"This means that our effort to ensure the implementation of the sexual violence crime law becomes crucial," she said at a press conference on the Indonesian Women Ulema Congress (KUPI) in Jepara, Central Java, on Friday.
According to Yentriyani, many people do not have in-depth information about what is regulated in the sexual violence crime law, which was enforced in early 2022.
The law aims to guarantee the fulfillment of the victim's rights in criminal procedural law as well as regarding the sentencing itself, she said.
"We still have homework because until now, the revision of the Criminal Code has not ensured that various issues of sexual violence left behind from the law on the crime of sexual violence can be handled better," she added.
According to her, there are still several violent practices against women that are being carried out in the name of religion and culture, for example, female genital mutilation (FGM).
Yet another challenge is child marriage, which, based on the sexual violence crime law, is deemed forced marriage.
"The fulfillment of human rights cannot be separated from efforts to eradicate all forms of violence against women," she stressed.
Komnas Perempuan said that gender-based discrimination is at the root of sexual violence against women due to the social structure and conditioning that still places women below men and regards women only as supporters.
