Using this ETLE camera does not mean we want to give too many fines, but we want to send a message that all roads in Jakarta are being monitored
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Police Traffic Directorate of Greater Jakarta Area is optimistic that the application of electronic traffic law enforcement ticketing (ETLE) and the removal of manual ticketing will eventually improve discipline among road users.

"We want to educate the public. Do they want to continue to be disorganized? No, right?" head of the Police Traffic Directorate, Senior Commissioner Latif Usman, asked here on Monday.

Since the abolition of manual ticketing, there has been a surge in violations by road users looking to avoid electronic tickets, for instance, some residents have been removing license plates to avoid tickets.

However, he said he believes this is only a temporary phenomenon that would slowly cease as the application of electronic ticketing proceeds.

"I'm sure they were initially forced into it, but after a while, they will realize it themselves--instead of taking off the number plate every day and committing a violation. Later on, they will realize, ‘Well, I'll just follow the orders;’ if they are orderly there will be no problem," Usman added.

According to him, the ETLE has not been adopted because officers want to issue as many tickets as possible.

He said he would like to stress that ETLE implementation means that all roads in the capital city are being supervised for the convenience and safety of people as they travel and conduct their activities.

"Using this ETLE camera does not mean we want to give too many fines, but we want to send a message that all roads in Jakarta are being monitored," he said.

National Police chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, has instructed the National Police Traffic Corps to optimize static and mobile ETLEs and reduce manual ticketing to prevent extortion.

The instruction was contained in the Telegram Letter from the Chief of Police Number: ST/2264/X/HUM.3.4.5./2022 dated October 18, 2022, and was signed by the head of Traffic Corps, Inspector General Shantyabudi.

The Police Traffic Directorate of Greater Jakarta Area has followed up on the instruction by withdrawing all ticket books from traffic police as one of the measures for eliminating manual ticketing.

It also plans to start implementing the ETLE system fully.
