Jakarta (ANTARA) - Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Head Dwikorita Karnawati stated that the results of monitoring in the past week showed that aftershock activity had become increasingly rare in the Cianjur District area, West Java Province.

She also said the aftershocks that occurred were of lesser magnitude.

"By considering these conditions, people can return to their homes, provided that their houses are not structurally damaged," Karnawati stated in Jakarta, Monday.

She reminded residents, whose houses were not damaged by the earthquake, to rearrange the furniture in their homes, ensure safe exit path from the house, and avoid arranging large and heavy objects from the exit path to prevent casualties when another aftershock occurs.

In addition, Karnawati urged residents to monitor the latest information on earthquake events from the agency through the BMKG info application or the 196 call center service.

Until Monday at 5:00 local time, the BMKG had recorded 296 aftershocks after the earthquake of magnitude 5.6 struck Cianjur District on November 21, 2022, at 13:21 local time.

According to the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Head, Daryono, the aftershocks that occurred in Cianjur were dominated by small earthquakes of magnitudes two to 2.5.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) remarked that until Sunday, the death toll in the earthquake climbed to 321 after the agency found three other bodies on Sunday.

BNPB Head Lieutenant General Suharyanto stated that 11 people were still missing. Meanwhile, 108 severely injured people were being treated at the hospital.

The number of people injured in the quake stood at 7,729. Of the total, 595 suffered severe injuries, while 7,134 sustained light injuries.

In addition, the number of homes damaged in the earthquake was recorded at 62,628, he noted. Some 27,434 houses were seriously damaged, 13,070 were moderately damaged, and 22,124 houses were lightly damaged.

The damaged infrastructure included 398 schools, 160 places of worship, 14 health facilities, and 16 buildings or offices, he added.

A total of 16 districts and 146 villages were affected by the earthquake.
