Carrying out heavy research necessitates a strong supporting system," he noted during the Meet Brida event themed “Strengthening Regional Research and Innovation Ecosystem for Sustainable Development
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Laksana Tri Handoko urged regional governments to conduct join funding to drive research and innovation based on the regions' potential and need.

"Carrying out heavy research necessitates a strong supporting system," he noted during the Meet Brida event themed “Strengthening Regional Research and Innovation Ecosystem for Sustainable Development” streamed virtually, Monday.

"However, to drive researchers to meet the demand of regions more, we encourage join funding," he emphasized.

Under the scheme, the regional government's fund can be disbursed along with BRIN's research donation funding program, with research facilities and infrastructure support from BRIN, in order to access the best researchers across Indonesia.

"Later, we open a join call to conduct research based on the regions' need," he remarked.

For instance, regional governments can allocate funding of Rp1 billion for regional research, he highlighted.

This fund allocation can be delivered to the Regional Research and Innovation Agency (Brida) for join funding with the Research Facilitation Deputy at BRIN that holds the research donation, he explained.

"What is most important is that regional governments have the awareness and solutions based on science and technology. Regional governments will receive proven technology solutions without spending large amount of money," Handoko noted.

Brida is not a research executor, but rather, a catalyst to encourage regional establishments, such as universities and industries, to develop research in regions, he remarked.

"We do not recommend Brida to become a research institution in regions. That is not their main purpose since research is expensive," he stated.

The BRIN is tasked with strengthening research and innovation in regions, such as by helping regions in developing policies based on research and science.

The BRIN also has two major programs -- researcher mobility and research donation – that include nine research donation schemes for industries.
