"G20 member states control 80 percent of the global gross domestic product (GDP). Countries are competing for influence and developing the ecosystem. Till when must we follow the Chinese or American ecosystems while we can develop our own Indonesian ecosystem?” the minister asked here on Tuesday.
With a population of 260 million, Indonesia has an ever-growing economy that has become a part of the global supply chain, he said.
While affirming that Indonesia is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 to create a sustainable future for younger generations, Thohir said that the nation will pave its own way to achieve the goal instead of following other countries.
"Indonesia has agreed to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060 for the sake of our grandchildren, but it is not at the demand of foreign countries. They once used natural resources in the past, but they became developed earlier (than us). Because they are losing in the competition with us, they create a new supply chain to make our electricity expensive," he added.
To achieve climate goals, innovations to bolster the national economy in various sectors are essential, the minister said.
The digital economic sector, whose value is expected to reach Rp4,500 trillion by 2030, is one of the sectors that could potentially bolster the national economy, he pointed out.
"We need innovation to develop the national economy. To address stagnation in our gaming industry, innovation is essential. Now is Indonesia's opportunity to utilize its demographic bonus to realize economic growth and achieve an advanced Indonesia," Thohir remarked.
