Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has called for the development of a strong energy ecosystem in Indonesia to support the transition from fossil-based to clean energy.

"The key to a successful energy transition (is that it) must be supported by a strong energy ecosystem," head of BRIN’s Energy Research and Manufacture Organization, Haznan Abimanyu, said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

In his state address at the annual session of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) and the joint session of the House of Representatives (DPR) and the Regional Representatives Council (DPD), President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said that besides downstreaming, the optimization of clean energy sources and the green economy must continue to be improved.

He noted that clean energy from solar heat, geothermal, wind, sea currents, and bioenergy will attract the manufacturers of low-emission products.

For a successful energy transition, the energy ecosystem in Indonesia will need to be strengthened, which will require the involvement of all parties, including the government, academia, researchers, the private sector, and industry, Abimanyu said.

The involvement would range from government policies, research and innovation developed by BRIN, implementation by the private sector, to community participation in the use of efficient and smart energy.

Currently, Indonesia is switching from non-renewable fossil energy to new renewable energy. One of the options is by optimizing nuclear facilities in Indonesia, he noted.

Abimanyu said that research on renewable energy, particularly nuclear energy, has provided new opportunities to support global commitments on reducing carbon emissions to reach the net-zero target by around the middle of the century.

According to acting deputy for human resources, science, and technology at BRIN, Edy Giri Rachman Putra, this emphasizes the importance of research and development of nuclear power as the spearhead of clean energy technology.

Several renewable energy laboratories, including research reactors and related laboratories, can be maximized to conduct research and innovation in the energy sector.

"Nuclear energy is expected to play a more significant role in supporting green economic growth in the future," he said.
