President Prabowo raised the Thailand-Cambodia conflict during a one-on-one meeting with Prime Minister Anwar at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday morning.
"I would like to congratulate you on your leadership in ASEAN, through which you have successfully mediated and brokered a ceasefire in the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia - an achievement we should be grateful for. I thank you for this," Prabowo told Anwar.
He affirmed that Indonesia is willing and ready to support Anwar, both as Malaysia’s head of government and as ASEAN’s current chair.
"Thank you. This (ceasefire) is a breakthrough of critical importance. We want ASEAN to remain committed to resolving conflicts peacefully through consultation, discussion, and negotiation," Prabowo affirmed.
For his part, Prime Minister Anwar stressed that as ASEAN chair, Malaysia will continue to rely on and uphold the regional bloc’s framework to address shared challenges, including the tensions between Thailand and Cambodia.
"Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, and the Philippines share the responsibility of monitoring the ongoing peace process," Anwar told the Indonesian president.
President Prabowo welcomed Anwar at the Merdeka Palace for the 13th Indonesia-Malaysia Annual Consultation to exchange views on strategic bilateral issues and existing agreements.
The two leaders are also scheduled to witness the signing of memoranda of understanding covering cooperation in several areas, such as land border management, healthcare, and technology.
Indonesia’s delegation at the event included Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono, State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi, Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian, and Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin.
Also present were Head of the Indonesian State Intelligence Agency (BIN) Muhammad Herindra and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
