Speaking to journalists in Jakarta on Thursday, Amir expressed gratitude to the head of state and said he would personally inform his client of the granted clemency on Friday.
Lembong, who served as trade minister under the President Joko Widodo administration in 2015 and 2016, was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison by a Jakarta court on Friday, July 18.
The Jakarta Corruption Court found the former trade minister, better known as Tom Lembong, guilty of corruption in relation to the improper issuance of sugar import permits that resulted in state losses of Rp194.72 billion.
With this abolition, which results in the complete and permanent closure of Tom Lembong's case, President Prabowo has sent a letter No.R.43/PRES/07/2025 dated July 30, 2025, to the House of Representatives (DPR).
In response to the letter, the House announced, on Thursday evening, its approval of the president's request to grant abolition to the former trade minister.
To follow up on the approved abolition, Amir said he would hold a meeting with his colleagues to decide their stance, as they need to thoroughly discuss the legal implications of the clemency granted to their client.
He also reiterated his high appreciation for President Prabowo's decision to grant clemency to Tom Lembong.
