The modeling results show that the earthquake has no potential for a tsunami.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a 6.2-magnitude (m) earthquake that rattled southern parts of East Java Province on Tuesday afternoon was caused by deformation or fault in the outer-rise zone.

"The source mechanism analysis showed that the (fault which causes the) earthquake has a downward movement (or called normal fault)," head of BMKG’s Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, noted on Tuesday.

Daryono remarked that the earthquake hit on Tuesday at 1:07 p.m. Western Indonesia Standard Time (WIB) at 10.70 degrees South Latitude and 113.38 degrees East Longitude.

Precisely, the epicenter of the earthquake was located at sea at a distance of 223 kilometers to the south of Jember District, East Java Province, at a depth of 10 kilometers (km).

The BMKG official noted that the shocks were felt in the Jember, Gubukmas, Mataram, Kepanjen, and Sumberpucung areas in East Java Province, at Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale III -- or felt akin to a truck passing by.

Meanwhile, residents in the Kuta and South Kuta areas in Bali Province sensed the vibrations at an intensity of MMI II-III.

Furthermore, the people in Banyuwangi, Madiun, Ponorogo, and Sawahan areas in East Java Province; Bantul and Yogyakarta areas in Yogyakarta Province; Klaten areas in Central Java Province; as well as Karangasem areas in Bali Province felt the shocks at an intensity of MMI II.

The MMI II vibrations could sway several light hanging objects.

"The modeling results show that the earthquake has no potential to trigger a tsunami," Daryono remarked.

He noted that two aftershocks occurred as of 1:30 p.m. WIB, with the greatest magnitude of 4.6.

He appealed to the public to remain calm and not be influenced by false information regarding the disaster.

In addition, people are advised to avoid buildings damaged by the earthquake.

"Make sure that your building is earthquake-resistant or that there is no damage due to the quake that can endanger the structure of the building before you return to it," the BMKG official stated.
