Teachers are the victims of the curriculum target and students are the next victims
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry called on teachers to channel greater attention to the students' capability rather than complete the curriculum as per target.

"Teachers are the victims of the curriculum target and students are the next victims," Acting Head of the Curriculum and Learning Center at the Ministry Zulfikri Anas noted during the 14th Innovation Meeting here, Tuesday.

Teachers in several regions are still focusing on meeting the curriculum target, he pointed out.

To achieve this target, teachers are still only looking at materials in books and using them the same way for all children in a class, he emphasized.

The issue is that this method does not necessarily fit for all students in the class. There is a case wherein a 10th grade student possessed the same multiplication skills as a 2nd grader.

According to Anas, this incident occurred since teachers only teach based on curriculum without taking into account the students' capability.

The students' literacy levels are actually quite high. However, the established curriculum sometimes made their literacy levels seemingly drop to zero.

Thus, he deemed early childhood education to be the most crucial period since it serves as a foundation. Someone who teaches students during that period is not just teaching the children but also their parents.

Anas suggested that in order to improve the students' capability from an early age, a regulation should be in place that binds the education office with schools.

The Merdeka curriculum was designed by the government to be implemented in all schools, Anas added.

"This can be done as long as children are willing to learn and adults, who assist them, can do it," he explained.

"The goal is not to change the curriculum but to improve the education quality service to students," he remarked.
