Not all villages or settlements must be vacated and only areas that directly intersect with the Cugenang FaultCianjur, W Java (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) urged earthquake survivors in Cianjur District, West Java Province, to not rebuild their buildings on the nine-kilometer Cugenang Fault.
BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati explained, here on Thursday, the extent of the Cugenang Fault that was believed to have caused the 5.6-magnitude earthquake that rattled Cianjur District on November 21, 2022.
"The nine-kilometer Cugenang Fault stretches from Cibeureum Village, across Cijedil Village, Mangunkerta Village, to Sukajaya Village, which are all located in Cugenang Sub-district, and then it ends in Nagrak Village, Cianjur Sub-district," she noted.
In addition to the settlements located directly above the Cugenang Fault, habitations in the surrounding areas are prohibited from being rebuilt since they will also be prone to collapsing when another earthquake strikes in future.
The BMKG head said that her side will prepare a release to show details of the extent of the fault that crosses the district.
"Not all villages or settlements must be vacated and only areas that directly intersect with the Cugenang Fault," she emphasized.
Settlements that should be relocated are those lying directly in the core area of the fault as well as those located in a radius of 300 meters on the left of the core area of the fault and at a radius of 500 meters on the right of the core area of the fault.
Karnawati remarked that residents living in the prohibited area would be relocated to several places prepared by the government, such as in the sub-districts of Cilaku and Mande.
President Joko Widodo earlier said that some 53 thousand homes were damaged due to the earthquake comprising 12,900 houses that were heavily damaged, 15 thousand houses that incurred moderate damage, and 25 thousand houses that suffered slight damage.
Some Rp60 million will be given to residents whose houses suffered heavy damages, Rp30 million to those with moderately damaged houses, and Rp15 million to residents with houses that bore slight damages.
The government will also help in the reconstruction of damaged public facilities, including 272 worship places and 540 schools.
