Jakarta (ANTARA) - The progress of the nation's democracy will depend on women's participation and involvement, chairperson of the General Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), Rahmat Bagja, said here on Tuesday.

"The progress and right path of the nation's democracy lies on the shoulders of women as well, not just men," he affirmed here on Tuesday.

According to Bagja, women will have an important and determining role in deciding the fate of Indonesia and the nation's next generation.

He said that if women experience problems, it can affect the growth and development of the next generation.

"If voters choose the wrong leader, then this nation's position toward women will be problematic. (For example, in the attention devoted to women's problems such as) how many expecting mothers die while giving birth," he expounded.

He then explained the link between women and elections.

"The election is about fighting for issues, fighting for visions, the missions going forward, and the leaders for (paying) attention to (the issues faced by) women, that's the link," Bagja said.

In fact, he said, the nation may face problems if voters, including women voters, make the wrong choices.

According to him, women have a crucial role in all aspects of a nation's democratic life.

Therefore, he emphasized the role of women in election implementation, either as supervisors, organizers, voters, or candidates, for upholding democracy.

On Tuesday, Bawaslu held the “National Consolidation of Women General Elections Supervisors” in an effort to strengthen women’s participation in electoral supervision. Women's involvement in the supervision of elections is considered to have an impact on democratic development and issues concerning women and children.

Bawaslu also urged the government, election organizers, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and society to work together to realize women's participation in election organization.

Earlier, Minister of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection, Bintang Puspayoga, underlined the need for support from various parties to encourage women's involvement in politics, especially in the 2024 legislative elections.
