Jakarta (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives (DPR) is supporting the Indonesian government in developing the potential of renewable energy in the country, a member of Commission VII of the DPR, Mukhtarudin, has said.

"We in the DPR are giving support, including by proposing the New Energy and Renewable Energy Bill, in which one of the emphases is accelerating the use of new and renewable energy," he affirmed in a written statement issued here on Tuesday.

The government has made several policies to optimize food and energy so that the nation no longer needs to depend on their supplies from abroad, Mukhtarudin noted. He made the observation on the basis of a statement made by the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, which emphasized that the demand and potential for renewable energy in Indonesia are increasing.

"The data showed that Indonesia has a consistent addition of renewable energy in the overall energy mix. This is positive progress in shifting energy use in Indonesia to green energy," he explained.

The legislator emphasized that Indonesia is in a central position in the global energy transition management. The Energy Commission of DPR is providing support, for example, for various policies that favor a better future for Indonesians.

He expressed his support for the optimism of President Joko Widodo, who is aiming to make Indonesia a developed country. Moreover, Indonesia has enormous natural resources in the energy sector, including renewable energy sources, which have vast potential and are abundant.

"Many say that the current situation and condition of the world economy are not good. Yet, Indonesia has so far been relatively stable. This is the point of how we deal with global uncertainty," he said.

He urged the government to be consistent in implementing policies in the energy ecosystem, including in terms of the downstreaming of mining products, the creation of an electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem, and the push for domestic component level (TKDN).
