Banda Aceh, Aceh (ANTARA) - At least 2,139 residents of North Aceh district are still taking refuge although the floodwaters have receded gradually, a spokesperson said.

The flood refugees come from two sub-districts in North Aceh district, chief of public relations and protocols of North Aceh district, Hamdani said on Friday.

"The number of refugees is 2,139. Most of the refugees are from Lhoksukon sub-district with 1,771 refugees from 433 families, while 368 residents from 77 families come from Tanah Pasir sub-district," he informed.

As of Friday, floodwaters were still inundating 11 out of 19 flood-hit sub-districts. The sub-districts included Lhoksukon, Matang Kuli, and Samudera.

"The district government, through the Regional Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD), has donated aid during the panic period and set up public kitchens,” he said.

Head of prevention and preparedness at BPBD, Mulyadi, said that the floodwaters began to inundate residential areas on December 20, 2022.

The floodwaters reached a height of 30 centimeters to 1 meter.

The flood followed heavy rains in the past week, which caused the Keureuto, Pirak, and Pase rivers to overflow their banks.
