Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, said that since 2020, his administration has increased state revenue by up to 70 percent. From Rp600 trillion initially, it has shot up to Rp1.1 trillion in 2022.
“(The increase in our non-tax revenue) is not bad. Next in 2023, if we can successfully implement a new policy, one of the five programs, which is fishing in a measurable manner, then the basis of the non-tax state revenue will be from the caught fishes," he explained during a maritime discussion here on Monday.
The ministry has devised five breakthrough programs to implement the blue economy principle: quota-based and fishing zone-based measurable fishing; expansion of marine conservation areas, which take up 30 percent of Indonesia's sea area; development of marine, coastal, and freshwater cultivation; marine debris handling; and sustainable management of coasts and small islands.
Minister Trenggono said that his ministry has established farming villages, such as catfish farming villages, seaweed farming villages, and modern shrimp farming areas to increase the production of marine products in the long term.
In terms of global demand, it is currently around US$30 billion, he pointed out. This is a huge figure and Indonesia, given the extent of its marine area, has good potential to meet the global demand for shrimp.
"We are going toward that direction, preparing the land, and so on. Hopefully, in the remainder of this term of office until the end of 2024, we will be able to complete an area of approximately one thousand hectares of a modern shrimp pond area," he said.
"This is one of the targets of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, that by the end of 2024 it will reach two million tons of shrimp production," he said.
