One of the 'leaps' that we have to make is with disaster education and literacy
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta provincial government opened a disaster literacy center at the Jakarta Fire Management and Rescue Office building to improve disaster education and mitigation from an early age.

"It is for all -- elementary school, middle school, high school, and university students -- because disaster mitigation must be started from oneself," Acting Governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono stated during the inauguration of the Disaster Communication, Information, and Education Space here on Thursday.

The building has several rooms, including for procedures of first aid, flood prevention, and evacuation facilities during a flood.

In addition, there are rooms for procedures of evacuation during a fire and interactive training for earthquake preparedness.

The disaster literacy center is the first to use virtual technology, and it is expected to be used by the community in order to develop a culture of disaster awareness among people of Jakarta to make it a disaster-resilient city.

"Please disseminate (information) to all residents of Jakarta. (Inform) not only (the residents of) Jakarta but also (residents) in Greater Jakarta," he remarked.

The acting governor urged Head of the Jakarta Education Office, Nahdiana, to support in conducting the dissemination of information regarding the existence and benefits of the Jakarta disaster literacy center to all educational institutions and students at all levels.

Executive Chief of the Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Isnawa Adji stated that the literacy center is open from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. local time.

"The approach used for this disaster education is a gamification model through virtual reality and other interactive media that are currently developing to realize a Culture of Disaster Awareness from an early age in society," he remarked.

At Thursday's event, Deputy for System and Strategy at the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Raditya Jati, lauded the presence of the public service innovation made by the Jakarta provincial government.

"One of the 'leaps' that we have to make is with disaster education and literacy. This is one of the things that the Jakarta Provincial Government has initiated because our challenge in the future is the problem related to education for future generations," Jati remarked.
