Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will hold a special meeting to discuss and ensure the effective recovery of victims of past major human rights violations, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD has informed.

"How to guarantee that the (measure to ensure the victims') recovery (taken) by the government is effective? (First,) the President or the cabinet will hold a special meeting to talk about this," Mahfud said in a press statement released here on Thursday.

During the meeting, the President will assign tasks to some ministers and agencies and set targets or time limits for them to complete each of their duties, he added.

For instance, the President will ask a minister to make recommendations on the type of recoveries, and other different tasks to other ministers, including involving the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK), Mahfud explained.

If the task cannot be completed within the time limit, the government will form a task force to oversee the effectiveness of the recovery efforts made for the victims, he said.

The task force will report to the President on any recovery actions, developments, and problems they encounter.

"It has been agreed that temporarily, the task force will be in the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs. We will help because this is a form of coordination. We will also propose alternatives to the President, who will be the persons in charge, and where to monitor this," he elaborated.

Earlier on Wednesday (January 11, 2022), the President said that the Indonesian government has acknowledged 12 past serious human rights violations.

He conveyed this after examining an assessment report submitted by the human rights violation non-judicial resolution team (PPHAM), represented by its chairperson, Minister Mahfud.

"I express my utmost sympathy and empathy to victims and their relatives," the President stated.

The PPHAM team was formed on August 26, 2022, based on Presidential Decree No. 17 of 2022, to propose recommendations on recovery steps for victims and their families and measures to prevent violations similar to the 12 gross human rights violations recorded in the past.
