"After the mainstream media and our national public, the United Nations' Human Rights Council lauded the Indonesian government for its measures to resolve past grave human rights violations as reported by the team and followed up by the president," Mahfud said on his Twitter account @mohmahfudmd on Sunday (January 15).
The coordinating minister also quoted an @UNGeneva tweet showing a video of the spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Liz Throssell speaking to praise the Indonesian government's acknowledgement of human rights violations.
"We welcome President @jokowi acknowledgement and expression of regret for 12 historical incidences of serious human rights violations. A comprehensive transitional justice process will help to break the decades-long cycle of impunity," as written in the @UNGeneva tweet that was quoted by Mahfud.
Continuing his Twitter thread, he expressed gratitude to all parties that have supported the government to establish the Human Rights Violation Non-Judicial Resolution (PPHAM) Team, which he presided over.
Mahfud clarified that the PPHAM team and their work report did not negate any ongoing judicial resolution to past human rights violations.
He also welcomed all criticism to the government regarding the establishment of the PPHAM team and all efforts aiming to resolve all past major human rights violations.
"We express our gratitude to all parties offering their criticism because 'criticism is our vitamin'. Our Reform movement in 1998 is to provide avenues for criticism, as well as the space to counter the criticism. This is one progress of our democracy," the coordinating minister remarked at the conclusion of his Twitter thread.
Earlier on January 11, President Jokowi affirmed that the Indonesian government acknowledged 12 past major human rights violations after scrutinizing the PPHAM team report.
"With a clear mind and a sincere heart, as the head of state of the Republic of Indonesia, I acknowledge that major human rights violations had occurred in the past," Jokowi stated.
Apart from expressing sympathy to victims of human rights violations, the president also reiterated the commitment to fulfil unresolved rights for victims and prevent human rights violations in future.
