Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister of Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD appealed to the public to gain an understanding of some measures taken by the government to handle people allegedly involved in terrorism networks.

"We expect that the people would understand the government's measures, particularly counter-terrorism agencies, should they take that course of action," Mahfud stated here on Monday.

The agencies in question are the National Counter Terrorism Agency and Special Detachment 88 Antiterrorism unit.

He made the appeal, as people still made their own judgements whenever the government conducted their measures to process individuals suspected of being involved in acts of terrorism.

One such example of that behavior was when people deemed the government as discriminative and anti-democratic whenever it apprehended such individuals, he pointed out.

Truth was, before the personnel went with the capture operation, information regarding the suspect's involvement was collected and proven in court first, the minister remarked.

If there was a case of suicide bombing or terrorism, the government was often seen as either late or having lacked to anticipate ways to mitigate the incident.

To this end, Mahfud called on the people to understand the reason behind security personnel's decisions in the event of them taking firm action.

"Handling terrorism is a heavy task, as it will determine everything," the minister remarked.

Should the action to handle terrorism be delayed, it could also impact other aspects, such as the economy, political and legal affairs, and others.

On the other hand, he saw that currently, the measures to address and prevent terrorism had improved over the course of time and that or the number of terrorism acts had decreased concurrently.
