Jakarta (ANTARA) - Commission II of the House of Representatives (DPR) has approved a draft General Election Commission (KPU) regulation (or PKPU) on the determination of electoral districts for the 2024 General Elections.

The elections are scheduled to be held on February 14, 2024.

The DPR, KPU, Home Affairs Ministry, General Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) and General Elections Organizer Honorary Council (DKPP) have agreed to the provisions in the PKPU draft, chairperson of the commission, Ahmad Doli Kurnia, informed during a working meeting at the Parliament Complex here on Monday.

The draft regulation concerns the determination of electoral districts and seat allocations for members of the DPR, Provincial Regional Legislative Council (DPRD), and district/city DPRD for the 2024 elections, he said.

The agreement between those institutions on the PKPU draft seeks to carry out the provisions of Law Number 7 of 2017 on Election as well as the mandate of the Constitutional Court’s (MK’s) Decision Number 80/PUU-XX/2022, he added.

Earlier, through the decision, MK gave KPU the authority to rearrange the electoral districts for the elections of DPR and DPRD members. This was originally the DPR's authority based on Appendices III and IV of the Election Law.

The appendices became unconstitutional because they were not in accordance with the principles of good electoral planning and the provisions for establishing electoral districts, MK said.

Hence, MK agreed that the rearrangement of the electoral districts for the 2024 elections and the succeeding years be determined through the PKPU.

MK has asked the KPU to determine the electoral districts by no longer than February 9, 2023.

The KPU has tasked a team of experts with carrying out a better design simulation to establish the electoral districts.

According to KPU chairperson Hasyim Asy’ari, there will be an increase in the number of electoral districts and seat allocations for the elections of DPR members, namely from 80 electoral districts with 575 seats to 84 electoral districts with 580 seats.

"In Law Number 7 of 2017, there are 80 electoral districts with a total of 575 seats in the DPR. Meanwhile, based on Perppu (Government Regulation in lieu of Law) Number 1 of 2022, there are (four) new autonomous regions (provinces), thus adding four more electoral districts for the (election of) DPR (members)," he explained.

Regarding the election of the provincial DPRD members, the number of electoral districts will increase from 272 to 301, while the number of seat allocations will go up from 2,207 to 2,376.
