Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) outlined a strategy to help traditional markets compete with modern markets by streamlining practices to ensure good management so as to increase consumers’ comfort while shopping.

"The management should be improved. This means that traditional markets must be clean, not dirty," he said after visiting the East Batuphat Market, Lhokseumawe, Aceh, Friday.

The president believes that good management in the traditional market will help to maintain its cleanliness. Facilities for consumers at the market will also increase, so they will feel a greater sense of comfort while shopping, he added.

Furthermore, Jokowi noted that in terms of the price competition, traditional markets fare better than modern markets partly since traders in traditional markets are not burdened with electricity costs or high taxes.

"Price-wise, traditional markets will win because they are able to cut some costs, such as air conditioning, taxes, and electricity costs. It just needs good management, good arrangement of goods, a clean market, and parking lots. I think all regions must pursue this goal," he emphasized.

Earlier Friday, President Jokowi had paid a visit to the East Batuphat Market to monitor the prices of several commodities. The president noted that the prices of several commodities in the market were well-monitored.

"When I go to the market, I always check prices with the governor and mayor, check inflation, and check goods and services because this is important. Based on my observation, it is all good here," he stated.

Apart from observing the prices, Jokowi undertook the visit to the market to also hand over some cash assistance to the traders. In addition, the president distributed basic food assistance.

Accompanying the president during his visit to the East Batuphat Market were Minister of State Secretary Pratikno; Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Erick Thohir; Acting Governor of Aceh Achmad Marzuki and Acting Mayor of Lhokseumawe Imran.
