"Through technical coaching on fish products' processing, we expect that this can be used for fellow Islamic boarding school students keen to become entrepreneurs in fish products' processing," Director of Processing and Quality Process at the Directorate General of Maritime and Fisheries Product Competitiveness at the ministry Widya Rusyanto noted in a written statement received here on Monday.
The ministry collaborates with Yayasan Santripreneur Indonesia (National Santripreneur Foundation) to improve and empower the students' economy as well as to support national maritime and fisheries' product competitiveness, with the initiative being the manifestation of commitment to involve students in the sector, he affirmed.
According to data from the National Committee on Sharia Finance and Economy (KNEKS), 18 million students attend 29,194 Islamic boarding schools, and the figure has the potential to become one of the driving forces in the public economy, particularly in the maritime and fisheries sector, he noted.
Hence, Rusyanto's administration will consistently host programs on fisheries products' processing and students' economic empowerment.
Head of the Supervisory Board at Santripreneur Indonesia Ahmad Sugeng Utomo commended the ministry's support of the students and expressed confidence that their cooperation would result in several students becoming entrepreneurs in future.
"Collaboration which, God Willing, will be great when the time comes," Utomo remarked.
The ministry conducted technical coaching, with some 80 participants, comprising students and some residents of Yogyakarta and the surrounding area.
During the coaching, they were taught about proper fish management, diversification of maritime products, and business motivation.
