The incident claimed at least 19 lives, injured 51, and caused damage to several homes. Of the total victims, six are BPJAMSOSTEK's clients, comprising three salarymen, while the remaining three are informal workers.
The information was quoted from a statement received here on Wednesday.
The verification process is still underway to ensure that the victims' injuries were caused by the work accident. Main director of BPJAMSOSTEK Anggoro Eko Cahyo visited an insurance client currently receiving treatment at the Jakarta Pertamina Jaya Hospital.
The hospital also serves as BPJAMSOSTEK's assigned hospital for the treatment of work accidents.
"I, on behalf of the BPJAMSOSTEK management, express deepest condolences over the incident that happened last Friday. As a form of the state's protection of Indonesian workers, we pay a visit to clients, who fell victim to the incident. We want to make sure that they get the best treatment until they make a recovery," he noted.
Cahyo stated that the Work Accident Insurance Program protects the client from the risks of accidents at work, including during travel to and from work.
The customers will receive benefits, such as coverage for their treatment until they fully recover. Moreover, in the event of them being unable to work during the course of the treatment, they would receive compensation from BPJAMSOSTEK for a period of 12 months, with the same amount of their reported salary being given on a monthly basis. The compensation will be halved for the subsequent months until they recover.
Compensation that also included a maximum of Rp174 million (US$11,258) will be given to fund the education of children of clients, who passed away in work accidents. The funding will cover education ranging from elementary to tertiary level.
On the occasion, Director of the Pertamina Jaya Hospital Dody Alamsyah Siregar commended BPJAMSOSTEK's prompt action for assisting clients, who fell victims to the incident.
Cahyo urged all workers to register at BPJAMSOSTEK, as accidents can occur at anytime and anywhere, including at work.
He also urged the team to follow up on the victim's condition and establish coordination with other stakeholders if they found other victims.
Head of the Kebon Sirih Office of BPJAMSOSTEK Muyiddin DJ expressed his condolences over the incident.
"May this incident serve as a reminder for people and employers of the importance of safety at work and social insurance," he affirmed.
DJ expects that following the incident, companies and employees would equip themselves with proper protection mechanisms against economic and social risks from accidents and death at work as well as pursue a better life at old age.
