Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Ministry has urged the East Java Provincial Government and Surabaya City Government to evaluate the safe house service of the Surabaya Government following a case of violence against a minor.

"We urge the governments of East Java Province and Surabaya City to evaluate the services at the Surabaya City Government's safe house," the ministry's Deputy of Special Protection for Children Nahar stated when confirmed here on Thursday.

He emphasized the need for fixing and standardizing aspects that failed to meet provisions in the Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Minister's Regulation Number 2 of 2022, so that the service provider institution can meet the standards of quality services for women and child protection.

Nahar stressed that the procedure of handling children in service provider institutions must meet the provisions in the Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Minister's Regulation Number 2 of 2022 on Standards of Women and Children's Protection Services.

The ministerial regulation ensures the protection and fulfillment of rights of women and children in receiving services in a quick, accurate, comprehensive, and integrated manner.

The regulation stipulates service standards as guidelines for providing public services to protect women and children from all forms of violence, discrimination, and other problems, as well as to fulfill their rights, including for special protection, Nahar expounded.

Furthermore, the ministry has in place guidelines and conducted the standardization of institutions or units that provide special protection to children in accordance with the mandate of Article 3 of Government Regulation Number 78 of 2021 on Special Protection for Children.

The standardization has been started last year on 21 service provider institutions and is targeting 71 service provider institutions.

Earlier, a 17-year-old teenager living in a safe house owned by the Surabaya City Government was reportedly abused by a safe house officer. The victim is a minor in conflict with the law over a case of theft reported by the teen's school.
