Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta-owned drinking water company PAM Jaya is striving to increase its production capacity up to 10,900 liters per second (l/s) and expand the pipeline network to 4,500 kilometers by 2030.

"These two things will increase the number of customers by 1.1 million," president director of PAM Jaya Arief Nasrudin said here on Friday.

The production increase and pipeline expansion are aimed at extending the drinking water pipe coverage to all parts of the city by 2030.

In 2023, PAM Jaya started the construction of Jatiluhur I and Karian-Serpong Drinking Water Supply Systems (SPAM), Buaran 3 Water Treatment Installation (IPA), Pesanggrahan and Ciliwung SPAMs, as well as the search for bulk water sources.

In addition, PAM Jaya is building water reservoirs for areas that have difficulty accessing water, Nasrudin said.

This year, PAM Jaya also announced the SPAM development in Jakarta and sought residents' support in understanding its impact, such as traffic congestion due to the construction.

PAM Jaya's goal to realize water sovereignty for Jakarta citizens will be easier to carry out with public participation, Nasrudin explained.

"All residents can be involved in the common dream of piped water in Jakarta," he said.

His side is also committed to repairing pipes to reduce water leakage or non-revenue water. Repairs are carried out partially with a per-area system.

In 2022, at least 46.67 percent of the existing pipe network, or around 11 thousand km, experienced water leakage, with losses estimated at Rp2 trillion (US$129.2 million). However, as of February, leakage fell to slightly above 44 percent.

PAM Jaya has advanced technology for detecting leaking water distribution pipes.

When asked why the company is partially repairing leaking pipes, Nasrudin said that it is focusing on replacing decade-old main pipes rather than revitalizing distribution pipes.
