"The budget is prepared annually, in accordance with Regional Rule (Perda) No. 1 of 2015 concerning the providing of legal aids to the poor," Efredi Effendy, a member of the Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD) of Babel province, said in Pangkalpinang on Tuesday.
"This can be seen as a serious effort from the Babel government and DPRD to provide legal protection and assistance so that the poor can achieve justice when they are involved in a legal case," he added.
Effendy said he believes that poor people who are involved in legal cases can benefit from the budget by using it to pay for a lawyer.
Even so, the Perda needs to be more widely publicized to ensure that people know of its existence, he added.
"We in the DPRD of Babel province have conducted socializations to introduce this Perda. We hope that the Babel government would also take part in its process so that more people would be aware of the Perda," he said.
The parliament member further said that the socialization being conducted online through websites is not sufficient.
The socialization process needs to be conducted directly by holding a discussion with a face-to-face two-track question and answer (Q&A) session so that people can better understand the rule, he added.
"Regarding the absence of such a rule at the city and regency level, we hope that a Perda will also be immediately designed and adopted in order to provide justice for the people," Effendy said.
