Jakarta (ANTARA) - Public participation in conservation efforts is among the things emphasized in the Bill on Conservation of Living Natural Resources and their Ecosystems (KSDAHE), according to the House of Representatives (DPR).

"One of the approaches or emphasis regarding the flaws of the previous law is the participation of the public in carrying out conservation," Deputy Head of the House's Commission IV Budisatrio Djiwandono said, according to a written statement issued here on Wednesday.

According to him, the parliament has provided space to environmentalists and conservationists to actively participate in formulating the regulation.

"Likewise to indigenous people who have been living in conservation areas," he added.

Indonesia already has Law Number 5 of 1990 on the Conservation of Living Natural Resources and Ecosystems. However, according to the DPR, the regulation, which has been implemented for more than three decades, still has flaws. Specifically, it does not address public participation in conservation.

The parliament is currently preparing the Bill on Conservation of Living Natural Resources and their Ecosystems as a revision of Law Number 5 of 1990.

Apart from public participation, the DPR has also paid attention to indigenous people who live in conservation areas and are inseparable from biodiversity ecosystems in the formulation of the bill.

During last year's DPR plenary meeting, the bill was approved as an initiative bill of the DPR. The government submitted the problem inventory list (DIM) of the bill on October 31, 2022.

While the parliament discussed the bill in the previous session, the regulation has not yet been finished. The bill has currently entered the priority national legislation program for 2023 and is targeted to be completed soon.
