If the pregnancy is less than four months, I advise the mother not to travel especially during homecoming. If it is above four months, pregnant women are allowed to go but do not get too tired.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) has reminded people to pay attention to pregnant women during homecoming since the potential for miscarriage can be greater during long-distance travel.

"Women who are pregnant in the early stage should rest at home and they are not allowed to get tired," the head of BKKBN Hasto Wardoyo advised in Jakarta on Thursday.

Wardoyo, who is also an obstetrician, said that the pregnancy period is too vulnerable a period for women to travel long distances, such as during homecoming. This is due to the health condition of mothers who tend to feel tired more easily.

Health workers at hospitals have also found that many pregnant women experience bleeding or rupturing of membranes during homecoming trips. This potential is higher in the late stages of pregnancy.

"Women who are more than seven months pregnant tend to have their waters ruptured because they ride a motorcycle during homecoming. Please pay attention to those who are vulnerable, such as pregnant women and children," the BKKBN head added.

As a form of anticipatory measure and a step to ensure a comfortable and safe trip for pregnant women, Wardoyo advised family members to take them to a doctor for a recommendation and get medicines prescribed for them before the homecoming trip.

"If the pregnancy is less than four months, I advise the mother not to travel especially during homecoming. If it is above four months, pregnant women are allowed to go but do not get too tired," he said.

In addition, he also asked pregnant women to use trains or planes for homecoming, compared to cars, buses, or motorcycles.

He also reminded that all family members need to pay attention to the adequacy of nutritional intake during the trip since many pregnant women are also fasting.

Foods that contain carbohydrates, such as bread, and animal proteins, such as milk or fish, should be prepared as travel provisions. Families must also measure the sugar intake of mothers and children, Wardoyo added.

"If babies are lacking sugar intake, they do not move often. Be careful about this. Just because they do not move around, it does not mean that they are calm. They could be stressed," he cautioned.
