Padang, West Sumatra (ANTARA) - Acting Chief Executive of the West Sumatra Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Arry Yuswandi, reported that for now, there were no reports of casualties or damage caused by the 6.9-magnitude earthquake in West Sumatra.

"We have coordinated with a number of BPBD heads in several districts and cities, especially the Mentawai Islands District. They reported no casualties or damage," Yuswandi stated in Padang, Tuesday.

He clarified that specifically for the Mentawai Islands, some of the people, who fled their houses, were still in evacuation due to the rain and not the earthquake.

In general, Yuswandi stated that the conditions in West Sumatra were conducive, and the people had returned to their homes.

However, his side continues to collect information from all districts and cities since the data collection is still ongoing.

"We will periodically inform about the latest information," he stated.

Earlier, head of the earthquake and tsunami center of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Daryono, stated that the results of the BMKG analysis showed that there were parameter updates to this earthquake, with a magnitude of M6.9, from the initial of M7.3.

The epicenter of the earthquake is located at coordinates 0.94° LS; 98.38° east longitude, or to be precise, located at sea at a distance of 177 kilometers northwest of Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra, at a depth of 23 kilometers.

Regarding the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the quake that struck was a type of shallow earthquake due to the subduction activity of the Indo-Australia Plate. The results of the analysis of the source mechanism indicate that the earthquake has a thrust fault mechanism, Daryono stated.

This earthquake's impact was sensed in Siberut, Mentawai, at Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) VI, while in West Pasaman, Padang Pariaman, Agam, and Padang, the intensity of the quake was felt at MMI V.

He noted that five aftershocks were recorded until 04:00 local time, with the largest magnitude of M4.6.
