Jakarta (ANTARA) - The General Elections Commission (KPU) has designed a two panel vote calculation method for the 2024 General Election to prevent deaths of voting organizing group (KPPS) workers as had occurred during the 2019 General Election.

"We designed a voting policy with the panel method in which vote calculation is divided into two panels," KPU member Idham Holik told reporters here, Friday.

The two panels comprise panel A and B. Through the two panel method, KPPS, comprising seven people, can be divided into two groups, he explained.

Panel A can calculate votes for the presidential and vice presidential election as well as the Regional Representative Council (DPD) members' election.

Meanwhile, Panel B can calculate votes for members of the House of Representatives (DPR), provincial Regional Legislative Council (DPRD), and district as well as city DPRD.

In contrast, during the 2019 General Election, the KPU only utilizes the one panel method in vote calculation.

The panel method implementation stipulation will be contained within the KPU draft on vote collection and calculation.

The KPU had begun conducting voting simulation using the two panel method, such as in Palembang, South Sumatra, on Thursday.

In addition to designing the new vote calculation method, the KPU sets the age requirement for the KPPS workers for the 2024 General Election to at least 17 years and at most 55 years.

The age limit was established by the KPU based on the review that they had conducted and inputs received from various parties, such as the Health Ministry, election activists, and the public, he remarked.

Moreover, the KPU has read the research on the cause behind the deaths of KPPS workers in the 2019 General Election undertaken by Gadjah Mada University (UGM).

Based on KPU's own review result, it was found that people in the age bracket of 17 to 55 years have better immunity.

Thus, they can perform their job well as stipulated by KPU's bill on vote collection and calculation.
