Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian speed climber Veddriq Leonardo claimed the gold medal at the 2023 International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) World Cup in Seoul, South Korea, on Friday.

Leonardo set the quickest time of 5.01 seconds, beating Chinese climber Jinbao Long who posted a time of 5.12 seconds in the finals round, according to IFSC records.

Earlier the same day, Leonardo had set a new world record of 4.98 seconds in the qualifying round. He broke the previous record of 5.00 seconds set by his compatriot Kiromal Katibin at the 2022 IFSC World Cup in Chamonix, France.

He bested his world record again later on Friday with a 4.90-second run in the quarter-final round.

Meanwhile, Leonardo’s compatriot and previous world record holder, Katibin, failed to enter the final round after he finished 32nd in the qualifying round with a time of 5.71 seconds.

Xinshang Wang of China took the bronze medal in the men’s speed category with a time of 5.11 seconds.

Another Indonesian climber, Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi, won the bronze medal in the women’s speed category after she finished in 6.60 seconds.

Head of the Indonesia Climbing Federation (FPTI), Yenny Wahid, said that the results in Seoul will motivate athletes to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“Definitely (will increase motivation for the Paris Olympics). We always underline that these events are part of the process toward the Olympics,” she told ANTARA.

Polish speed climber and two-time women’s speed climbing world champion, Aleksandra Miroslaw, won the gold medal and set a new world record with a time of 6.25 seconds in the women’s event. She lowered her own previous record of 6.53 seconds, which she had set at the 2022 IFSC Climbing World Cup in Salt Lake City, the United States.

The silver medal in the women’s speed category was secured by another Polish climber, Natalia Kalucka, with a time of 6.67 seconds.

The 2023 IFSC Climbing World Cup in Seoul is being held from April 28–30, and is being participated by 287 athletes.

Indonesia has sent 9 athletes – 6 men and 3 women – to compete in the speed category of the World Cup series in Seoul.

The qualification period for Paris 2024 for sport climbing will begin in August 2023 at the IFSC Climbing World Championships in Bern, Switzerland.
