Jayapura (ANTARA) - The Foreign Affairs Ministry (MFA) has lauded Papua Youth Model United Nations (PYMUN) for organizing a United Nations (UN) assembly simulation for young Papuans from May 4–6, 2023.

The activity carried out by PYMUN will hopefully boost young Papuans' exposure and understanding of the importance of foreign policy, especially multilateral negotiations, an expert staff from the MFA Muhsin Syihab said in Jayapura on Thursday.

"The MFA is content and proud of the smart young Papuans' initiatives in taking real actions to broaden their international outlook regarding the crucial meaning of diplomacy," he added.

According to the expert staff, it is necessary to promote such actions further so that all Indonesian youths, including Papuans, can be on par with those in developed countries in terms of knowledge of diplomacy practices.

"This is indeed a good activity that in turn helps our duty in the ministry in disseminating Indonesian foreign policy in Papua," he said.

The activity can help young Papuans understand how to become diplomats, namely Indonesian state officials serving abroad, and fight for the country's interests through diplomatic and consular means, he added.

Meanwhile, PYUMN secretary general Mardiantika Watubun said that the event has been organized in response to young Papuans' eagerness to learn about formal assembly procedures and diplomatic practices through the Model United Nations (MUN) assembly.

"MUN is a simulation of the UN assembly where the participants are playing their roles as delegates of certain countries," he explained.

The three-day event is being held in Jayapura city. It has been joined by 500 participants and a number of speakers who are experienced in their fields.
