Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) reported that an eruption had occurred at Mount Anak Krakatau located in the waters of the Sunda Strait, South Lampung District, Lampung Province.

"Mount Anak Krakatau erupted on Friday at 9:20 local time. The height of the eruption column was observed at approximately 2,500 meters above the peak," the Observation Post Officer of Mount Anak Krakatau Deny Mardiono noted in a statement received here, Friday.

Mardiono explained that the eruption ash column looked gray, with thick intensity, towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 70 millimeters and a duration of 42 seconds.

Earlier, on Thursday (May 11), the PVMBG also recorded two eruptions at Mount Anak Krakatau that is located in Punduh Pedada Sub-district, South Lampung District.

The first recorded eruption reached a height of three thousand meters above the peak at 5:19 local time. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph, with a maximum amplitude of 70 millimeters and a duration of approximately two minutes and 12 seconds, he remarked.

The second eruption tended to be smaller, with a height of 1,000 meters above the peak, at 12:41 local time. The maximum amplitude was recorded at 70 millimeters and the duration was 143 seconds, he revealed.

Mardiono noted that throughout Thursday, Mount Anak Krakatau was recorded to have experienced one eruption, one low-frequency earthquake, two multi-phase earthquakes, one deep volcanic earthquake, two distant tectonic earthquakes, and one continuous tremor.

Until Friday, Mount Anak Krakatau was at level III or standby status that had been established since April 24, 2022.

The PVMBG recommends the public, visitors, tourists, and mountaineers to not approach the volcano or conduct activities within a five-kilometer radius of the active crater.
