Jakarta (ANTARA) - The 4th meeting on the Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on May 8–12, 2023, produced the Bali Strategy document, the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) Ministry informed.

"The Bali Strategy is a tool to provide guidance to member countries in strengthening the agreement implementation at the national, regional, and global levels," Chairperson of the FAO PSMA Bali, Nilanto Perbowo, said here on Tuesday.

According to him, the Bali Strategy document is part of an effort to eradicate illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing practices (IUUF) through the role of fishing ports.

"This strategy is to strengthen policies, laws, frameworks, institutions, and operational mechanisms," he said.

The Bali Strategy is a tool for coordination at national and regional levels for cooperation and information exchange, port entry and use, inspection and follow-up, and relations with international law and other international instruments, Perbowo explained.

In addition to the Bali Strategy, the PSMA meeting in Bali also produced Terms of Reference for the Technical Group on Information Exchange and questionnaires for the review and assessment of PSMA effectiveness.

Through the two documents, both parties and non-parties states will be asked to disclose information on ships requesting docking permits at the port of the participating state.

The meeting also agreed that the two documents can serve as a mark of commitment to the eradication of IUU fishing practices globally.

On the same occasion, the ministry's director of fisheries port and the Indonesian delegation head, Tri Aris Wibowo, said that his party is seeking to increase the number of ports.

These ports will be the locations for PSMA implementation in Indonesia.

Currently, there are four ports that have been designated for PSMA: the Ocean Fishing Port (PPS) Nizam Zachman, PPS Bitung, PPS Bungus, and Benoa Public Port.

"We will strengthen coordination with other ministries in using ports for PSMA," he added.
