Jakarta (ANTARA) - Libraries are not only places for collecting books, but they also have the important task of spreading knowledge to improve people's literacy, Head of the National Library (Perpusnas) Muhammad Syarif Bando has said.

"Perpusnas has carried out the relevant innovation steps, not only collecting and inventorying, but focusing on transferring knowledge through collaboration with the academic community, especially universities in the regions," he informed here on Wednesday.

During a discussion on “National Book Day and 43 Years of Perpusnas,” he said that libraries now have a new paradigm: 10 percent of their function involves managing collections, 20 percent managing knowledge, and 70 percent knowledge transfer.

Knowledge management is carried out by connecting authors and stakeholders, while knowledge transfer is meant for developing library science theories by cooperating with the academic community, he expounded.

"Sixty percent of our people live in rural areas that are still marginalized, so we invite universities to intervene to make a transfer of knowledge there," he said.

People in rural areas need simple books, for instance, books on how to apply economic recovery efforts and increase agricultural productivity, he added.

According to him, that is "the most fundamental correction" of the educational philosophy outlined by the Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Minister.

"Our educational philosophy should not only be defined by the ability of teachers or lecturers to teach their students, but how to provide knowledge that they want, choose the field they like, to provide what is needed by society," he said.

There are several stages of literacy development, which include literacy and numerical skills and character building, accessibility to reading materials, innovation and creativity in information technology (IT) development, and skills application in goods and services, he explained.

Indonesia is still at a low stage of literacy development, he added.
