Jakarta (ANTARA) - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati and Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin signed a cover letter for a proposal for the Indonesian Pandemic Fund as a form of the government's commitment to preparing for the next pandemic.

The inking of the cover letter is a real step by the government toward instituting a pandemic fund, Indrawati said. The plan for the formation of the fund was one of the results of the Indonesian G20 Presidency in 2022.

"As a country and region, we cannot ignore or treat the pandemic as a momentary shock and we can continue living," she said during the cover letter inking event, which was streamed online on Wednesday.

The COVID-19 pandemic should not be treated as a single major event, and all parties should learn from the health crisis that shook the entire country, she added.

On account of this, Indonesia, as the host of the 2022 G20 Presidency, made significant efforts to convince member countries to establish a Pandemic Fund.

The Indonesian Finance Minister lauded the Health Minister's leadership role in developing a credible health system mechanism that can be relied on at any time.

She also expressed her deepest gratitude to Sadikin and leaders in the health sector for their determination to ensure that Indonesia not only learns from the pandemic, but also grows from it.

She further said that the Pandemic Fund mechanism can be a means to demonstrate to the world that Indonesia's government is continuing to improve the quality of the national health system.

It could also help establish a spirit of cooperation and collaboration at the regional and global levels.

The Pandemic Fund was officially launched by President Joko Widodo on November 13, 2022, and it was formulated by G20 Finance and health ministers during Indonesia’s presidency of the grouping in 2022.
