The head of BRIN’s Nuclear Reactor Technology Research Center, Topan Setiadipura, stated that the lack of specific funding support to develop commercial and non-commercial nuclear power plants poses a challenge.
"BRIN's current major potential lies in cooperating with the private sector to build them," he pointed out in a statement released on Wednesday.
To develop more focused expertise, a target of realizing a nuclear power plant should be established, he explained.
Currently BRIN has two concepts for nuclear power plant construction: designs developed by BRIN as well as designs and technologies from other sources.
"However, the stages leading to implementation require funding. During the site permit and design approval stages, we are ready to provide full technical support," he added.
He mentioned that BRIN can more easily develop research or non-commercial reactors as long as there are parties that can cover the funding.
BRIN can also develop small-capacity commercial reactors that will be used exclusively within a specific complex.
These reactors will not be sold in the market and will be reserved for the consumption of users.
"We always invite vendors who possess the technology and are interested in promoting their technology in Indonesia," Setiadipura said.
On May 16, BRIN held a meeting with a team from PT Azet Surya Lestari to discuss the establishment of a nuclear power plant in Indonesia.
The company is a subsidiary of the Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC) based in Seattle, United States.
