Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Vice President Ma'ruf Amin has invited global religious leaders and scholars to continue to participate in efforts to build a more just and peaceful world.

He made the remarks at the International Conference on Religion, Peace, and Civilization 2023 here on Monday.

He said he expects religious leaders to provide guidance on ways to resolve global problems, especially inequality, poverty, conflict, war, and environmental issues.

“Hence, I encourage scholars and religious leaders to continue to push for the implementation of global ethics, namely mutual understanding, mutual respect, interdependence, and cooperation among all nations," he remarked.

Furthermore, Amin noted that in the past, the ancestors of the Indonesian people built several centers of civilization in Indonesia.

Some of the civilization centers were the Sultanates of Aceh, Indrapura, Banten, Cirebon, Demak, Tidore, as well as Ternate, he added.

Amin noted that the civilization centers were the legacy of Indonesia’s earlier generations in carrying out regional improvement.

“Thus, we (the government) must continue these (development) attempts not only at the national level, but also at the global level, along with global Islamic leaders to develop a more peaceful and better world," he added.

The conference on Monday was held by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) to encourage tolerance of diversity as well as contribute to world peace and civilization. It was attended by 300 participants.

Secretary General of the MUI Amirsyah Tambunan said that religion has a very important role in establishing peace and civilization as well as resolving conflicts in various regions in the world.

"Religious teachings are the main sources of peace and civilization," he remarked at the conference.

Tambunan noted that every religion teaches virtuousness and peace, hence every believer must maintain their attitude in society.

"If any party attempts to cause conflict, it is not sourced from religious teachings, but it is because of a misunderstanding of religious teachings," he added.
