Jakarta (ANTARA) - State-owned shipping operator PT Pelni is expected to become the backbone of President Joko Widodo's (Jokowi's) sea toll program, State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs/BUMN) Minister Erick Thohir has said.

"In the future, Pelni must be the backbone of the President's aspiration (regarding the sea toll program)," he added at the launch of Pelni's new logo and tagline at JIExpo here on Thursday.

At the event, Thohir lauded a presentation delivered by Pelni president director Tri Andayani on the transformation carried out by Pelni.

He praised Pelni's ferry KM Sinabung, which served as a floating accommodation during the 42nd ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, some time ago.

"KM Sinabung was great; the ship was clean, and the service was good," Thohir said.

He also expressed the hope that with the new logo and tagline, Pelni would compete with large SOEs from other countries.

"I hope this new logo and slogan will do something; just like when I inaugurated the new Pertamina Building. Not only the building, but we need to ensure that our SOEs can compete with large SOEs from various countries," he said.

In the future, SOEs will face the challenge of competing with other large state corporations from abroad, he added.

Earlier, Pelni launched its new logo and tagline, which are expected to infuse a new spirit and become a chance to accelerate the transformation in all lines of the company.

In her remarks, Pelni President Director Andayani shared Pelni's transformation results, such as an increase in the number of tasks given by the government, the free freight exodus transportation for motorcycles, Ciwandan-Panjang crossing transportation assistance, and floating accommodation in Mandalika to support the MotoGP event.

They further include providing floating accommodation to support the Sail Tidore national event, rescuing trapped tourists from an island in Karimun Jawa, and finally, providing floating accommodation in Labuan Bajo to support the 42nd ASEAN Summit.
