Malang, East Java (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Law and Human Rights will hold immediate discussions on the revision of the Narcotics Law with the House of Representatives (DPR).

A work meeting between the ministry and the DPR will be held on May 29, 2023, to discuss a number of related points, Deputy Minister of Law and Human Rights Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej said here on Thursday.

However, he did not provide further details regarding the points that will be discussed with DPR. During the meeting, the two parties are expected to agree upon a number of points concerning the Narcotics Law revision.

Hiariej only said that the ministry has prepared a number of discussion points that will be delivered in front of the House members. The points will be discussed in detail so that they can be agreed upon together, he added.

"We cannot yet (disclose what the points are). We will only deliver them during the work meeting. If we deliver them before the meeting, it will violate ethics," he explained.

The Narcotics Law revision is expected to be one of the solutions for tackling the issue of over-capacity at correctional facilities in Indonesia, he added.

This is because almost 70 percent of inmates at correctional facilities in Indonesia are booked for drug-related cases.

In addition to the Narcotics Law revision, the new Criminal Code has also become key for resolving the over-capacity issue, according to him.

The ministry has disseminated information on the new Criminal Code that will be implemented in 2026 among academicians and university students at Brawijaya University in Malang, East Java.

Brawijaya University has been the ninth out of sixteen venues for the Criminal Code dissemination event in 2023. A number of experts in the field of criminal law are also participating in the information dissemination.
