"Kemendikbud Ristek is conducting a mapping strategy to meet the needs for competent teachers," said Temu Ismail, the ministry's director of education for teacher profession (PPG), stated in Jakarta on Friday.
In addition to mapping, the ministry is also improving the process of recruitment and assessment by teacher education institutions (LPTKs) that are responsible for training teachers in the country.
According to Ismail, these two steps are taken to accurately describe the needs for teachers, produce effective solutions, and result in competent teaching staff.
The next step is to recruit prospective teachers through the selection of State Civil Servants with Employment Agreements (ASN PPPK) to provide certainty for teachers after they graduate, he noted.
"In this way, there is certainty in terms of assignment after a teacher has carried out PPG," Ismail stated.
He also said that well-established and sustainable collaboration between the ministry and local governments, as well as organizing the LTPKs, were also of utmost importance.
These efforts aim to provide work guarantees for these teachers, so that they can work professionally, he stated.
However, the biggest challenge in meeting the needs is actually raising awareness of all parties that the teacher's problems are a shared concern, he stated.
"Local governments have an obligation to jointly address the teachers' problems with the central government, including the LPTKs," he emphasized.
He highlighted that another strategy that should be developed is accelerating the PPG or fast track route, as well as building communities in each province to respond to the challenge of meeting the needs for teachers.
The plan to build communities in each province will involve more elements of stakeholders in the regions in order to realize equitable distribution of teachers.
"Later, the communities will understand problems in their areas and conduct a mapping of the needs for teachers and can contribute to planning in terms of education, including teachers' recruitment and assignment," he stated.
