"Collaboration is necessary in order to address climate change and to support reduction in greenhouse gas emissions as well as build Indonesia's climate resilience," Director General of Climate Change Control at the ministry Laksmi noted during a technical meeting on climate change in Sulawesi on Tuesday.
By pursuing efforts to adapt and mitigate to climate change, the regional government cans contribute to the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), she pointed out at meeting held in Palu, Central Sulawesi.
"Mitigation is carried out by involving many sectors at ministries and institutions, as well as Organization of Regional Agencies in provincial, district, and municipal scopes. Hence, collaboration becomes the key to the program's success," she stated.
The regional government needs to formulate measures and then implement them as well as monitor the progress in reduction of greenhouse gas emissions so as to be evaluated, Laksmi explained.
She highlighted the technical meeting's function as a way to learn together about progress in climate change mitigation.
"This Sulawesi regional technical meeting is part of similar meetings that have been held in Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara," she noted.
Climate change is the greatest challenge for mankind as it requires people to change their behavior towards the environment, she said.
Indonesia, as part of the global community, agrees to maintain the earth's temperature, so that the average increase is no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century, she added.
She highlighted the urgency to apply such measures, as they are aimed at preventing disastrous events that could endanger living beings.
"Increase in the earth's surface temperature will have an impact on the ecosystem change. Of course, it can (cause) hydrometeorological disasters. Indonesia aims to reduce 31.89 percent of greenhouse gas (emission levels) by 2030 with its own efforts," she remarked.
Deputy Governor of Central Sulawesi Ma'mun Amir expressed his administration's support for the ministry's initiative to control climate change.
"We give full support for the established cooperation, and the formulated action plan will be implemented in form of programs in order to get the best of it in the future," he stated.
As per Central Sulawesi Governor Regulation Number 30 of 2021 on the Regional Action Plan on greenhouse gas reductions, the programs will be incorporated into the regional government's measures in maintaining the environment, he added.
